The Burren, a Global Geopark

The Burren, A Global Geopark

The Burren together with the Cliffs of Moher Geopark were awarded UNESCO-recognised Global Geopark status in 2011. Geoparks are special regions in the world that boast outstanding geological heritage and vibrant local culture.

In the stunning surrounds of the Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark, you will find the longest cave system in Ireland, the largest stalactite in Europe, pristine beaches and sculpted limestone mountains. Uncover magical, meandering walkways, clints and grikes, the hidden churches and the sacred wells. Be amazed by some of the best-preserved early medieval forts and cashels in the country and a host of wild flora and fauna.

The Burren and Cliffs of Moher Geopark is also an organisation whose ultimate aim is to spearhead sustainable tourism that develops and promotes the region as a truly special encounter-rich destination, strengthens the local economy and improves the visitor experience. The Geopark are a major support of the Burren Tolkien Society festival.
