JRR Tolkien in the West of Ireland

Rose MacNamara & J.R.R. Tolkien

Rose MacNamara (nee Murphy) recalls meeting J.R.R. Tolkien at her home in 1949 when he was an External examiner for the then University College Galway (now NUIG). She reads from a letter he wrote to her just after she took her vows as a nun in India. In the letter he also tells her that his son Fr John had said a (Latin) mass for her deceased father in which J.R.R. Tolkien was a server.
